Prep Time: 10 minutes (+ optional 30 min marinate)
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
For the Chicken & Marinade:
· 8-10 chicken drumsticks (about 3 lbs / 1.4 kg)
· 1 tsp salt
· ½ tsp black pepper
· 1 tsp smoked paprika
· 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
For the Honey Garlic Glaze:
· ⅓ cup (80ml) honey
· ¼ cup (60ml) soy sauce (low-sodium recommended)
· 4-5 large garlic cloves, minced (about 2 tbsp)
· 2 tbsp rice vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice
· 1 tbsp sriracha or ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
· 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger (or 1 tsp ground ginger)
· 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp cold water (slurry, for thickening)
For Garnish:
· Sesame seeds
· Sliced green onions
· Fresh chopped cilantro or parsley
Instructions
- Prep & Season Chicken:
- Pat the drumsticks completely dry with paper towels. This helps them brown better.
- In a large bowl, toss the drumsticks with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and oil until evenly coated.
- Sear the Chicken (Optional but Recommended):
- Heat a large oven-safe skillet, Dutch oven, or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil if needed.
- Sear the drumsticks in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown. Remove and set aside. This step builds flavor but can be skipped for a quicker bake.
- Make the Glaze & Combine:
- In the same pan (or a bowl if baking without searing), whisk together the honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, vinegar, sriracha (if using), and ginger.
- Return the seared drumsticks to the pan, turning to coat in the glaze. Alternatively, you can place the seasoned (un-seared) drumsticks in a 9×13 baking dish and pour the glaze over them.
- Bake:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- For Sear & Bake Method: Place the oven-safe skillet with the drumsticks and glaze in the oven.
For Direct Bake Method: Cover the baking dish with foil. - Bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil (or uncover the skillet), flip the drumsticks, and baste with the pan juices. Bake uncovered for another 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature of 175°F / 79°C) and the glaze is thick and sticky.
- Thicken the Glaze (If Needed):
- If your glaze is not thick enough after baking, carefully transfer the drumsticks to a plate.
- Place the skillet or baking dish with the pan juices on the stovetop over medium heat.
- Whisk in the cornstarch slurry and simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to a syrupy consistency.
- Return the drumsticks to the pan and toss to coat.
- Serve:
- Garnish generously with sesame seeds, sliced green onions, and fresh herbs.
- Serve hot with steamed rice, roasted vegetables, or a crisp salad to soak up the delicious sauce.
Tips & Variations:
· Marinate for Depth: For even more flavor, marinate the seasoned drumsticks in the glaze for 30 minutes to 2 hours in the refrigerator before cooking.
· Crispy Skin Lover? Pat the drumsticks extra dry and bake them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Brush with glaze during the last 10-15 minutes of cooking to avoid burning.
· Slow Cooker Method: Place seasoned drumsticks in the slow cooker. Pour glaze over top. Cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours. Thicken the sauce at the end using the cornstarch slurry on the stovetop.
· Air Fryer Method: Cook seasoned drumsticks at 380°F (193°C) for 18-22 minutes, flipping halfway. Warm the glaze in a saucepan until thickened, then toss the cooked drumsticks in it.
· Alternative Cuts: This glaze works wonderfully with chicken thighs, wings, or even bone-in chicken breasts. Adjust cooking time accordingly.
· Make it a Meal: Add chopped carrots, potatoes, or bell peppers to the pan halfway through baking for a complete one-pan dinner.
· Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
Enjoy these irresistibly sticky, flavorful, and easy drumsticks that are guaranteed to become a new family favorite!
